WHITWAR

For the Little Folks

Reviving a charitable magazine first published in 1903.

The Whitwar magazine was first published by twelve year old Miss Gladys Evelyn Warren and her friends to raise money for the Little Folks Ward at the North Eastern Children's hospital in Bethnal Green, London. We are continuing her work.

1 March 2026:- This site is still being built. There is a lot more information being added daily so please do check back soon. Many sections are incomplete and have dead or broken links - in some cases these are placeholders for future content. Thanks for your patience and support.

General notice on ethics and optics of charitable display: The fundraising model discussed within these pages depended on portraying “poor little children” as objects of pity and moral duty. This idiom was common in Edwardian philanthropy and reflects broader contemporary understandings of child poverty and hospital charities. Verbatim transcription of contempory sources does not imply endorsement of these attitudes but it is preserved for historical accuracy and critical reflection.

About me

Firstly, I am facinated with social history and love genealogy and targeted research projects! I have no connection to Gladys Warren or the North-Eastern Hospital for Children beyond being the custodian of her magazine, and when I started this journey I knew very little about Victorian hospitals, child illness, poverty etc. - I'm a little better informed now but still have a lot to learn. I enjoy reading and am a big proponent of life-long learning. I always like to try to help others wherever I can; so if you need help with something drop me a message in my guestbook . I might not be able to help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

Neocities: Web 1.0 / IndieWeb inspired

I am trying to style this site in a Web 1.0 style whilst being respectful to the aims of the magazine. It's a balancing act between the plain and boring websites we see everywhere today; and the glitter and flashing animations of the 90s (which is what we really want, right.?) My nostalgia for the old internet led me to Neocities, which is what I have used to create and host this site. We are going back to basics and building a community without the algorithms and shady practices of the big corporations. I expect Neocities to be the perfect home for The Whitwar in 2026 and beyond; and I am very much looking forward to e-meeting my readers!
